Jabaal Sheard has had nothing short of a commendable career. The 10-year veteran has had 393 tackles, 52.5 sacks, 72 tackles for loss, 95 QB hits and 14 forced fumbles over his career making him a consistently above-average pass rusher.
However, like most, 2020 has been a unique year for Sheard. Coming off of a modest 4.5 sack performance in 2019, Sheard had no takers in free agency causing him to spend the first five weeks on his couch.
“I was in south Florida just being a dad. Living the norm life, I guess. Which hasn’t been so normal for me. I’ve been in football in August/September since I can remember,” Sheard told reporters on Friday. “It was different being in South Florida, I was back home and, on the couch, watching football. In my head, knowing I kind of missed it, I missed football. I knew I would have the opportunity to help a team.”

And an opportunity he would have. Sheard came back to football as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad — he would get elevated eventually for one game. Being a member of the practice squad was once again a new experience for Sheard.
“It was humbling, I’ll be honest. It was very humbling. You go through the workout, and I have never done a workout either in free agency. It was very humbling. Practice squad, I just knew I had to get on the field and prove myself. That was my mindset,” Sheard said.
Sheard’s hard work eventually paid off and the rest has been history. He has spent the last five games developing into his pass-rushing role with Big Blue where he is now their premier edge defender.
